Legends say that it will take twelve years of continuous training to become a Kalari master. This is the claim made by the Northern Kalari systems and it may be true in thier case. People in the past had enough time to spare and when children joined a Kalari at about 5 years of age, they could train for the prescribed twelve years. Even in the past, the southern style Kalari training was much simpler than the northern system but in many cases much more effective where self defense/war was concerned. Much of the techniques can be learned in about two years of rigorous training. But in modern times even this is not possible for a person who wants to learn kalarippayattu and could spare much shorter periods. This is especially the case of people from outside India who can visit and stay in a Kalari for a period of less than six months. in order to meet the demands of such persons we have devised a training system that will suit both the persons who can spare two yeas and others who can spend only about a month in Kerala, India. Thus we offer 1. A full two year course that takes you from the very basics to the highest level of Kalari training 2. Short term modular courses from one month to one year. Each module will concentrate on one aspect of Kalari training like, empty hand sets, Kalari long staff, Kalari short stick, knife and short weapons etc. 3. Yearly training camps for one or two weeks of duration. UPCOMING "KALARIPPAYATTU" TRAINING CAMPS (FY 2008)
**KALARI KAIPPORU** Kalari Kaipporu is an offshoot of Thekkan Kalarippayattu developed by Sudarsana Kalari Sanghom. This system is developed mainly for learning survival in a fight against one or several opponents, armed or unarmed. The classic Thekkan Kalari is a comprehensive system. Then why an offshoot? The main difference between the classic Thekkan Kalari and Kalari Kaipporu is that while the classic system takes a few years to learn, the later takes much shorter time- often as short as six months. This System mainly concentrates on the empty hand techniques of the Thekkan Kalari and adapting those techniques in multiple opponent, multiple range situations. Training includes special Kalari calisthenics, fighting in different distances, different terrain, against single and multiple opponents. A selected number of solo forms, empty-handed techniques, weapon training-both conventional and unconventional, grappling, joint locks, throws and vital point striking are taken from the Classical Thekkan Kalari for this. Special psychological training based on Karmayoga is included in this system. The Kalari calisthenics are excellent in burning calories, strengthening ligaments, developing flexibility in complex movements, providing sufficient level of stretching to various muscles and ligaments and overall puts one to his/her best physical condition if done regularly for 90 minutes/3 times per week. Moreover there are four distinct ways one can practice these exercises, which are perfectly in compliance with the classical Yoga system and its spiritual advancements. Interestingly one can perform these exercises in their home and does not require a partner’s help. Last but not the least is that the Kalari solo forms and calisthenics are excellent methods to burn calories reduce fat and tone/strengthen one’s physique.
